How Do I Tell My Spouse That I Want A Divorce?

Broaching the topic of divorce with your husband or wife is no easy task.

Informing your husband or wife that you have done everything you can to repair the relationship, and that you have made the difficult decision to end the marriage is as hard as it gets.

As a friend of mine often says, difficult and necessary conversations must be had.

I have learned that there is not one right way to have this conversation.

However, there is one wrong way.

The wrong way is to:

  1. Pass the baton, and don’t have the conversation at all.
  2. Instead, hire a litigation attorney without speaking to your spouse.
  3.  Have a process server come to your home, and surprise your spouse with a lawsuit to start your divorce.

That is the conventional method to initiate a divorce. This is also a sure-fire way to start a long, expensive and emotionally damaging divorce.

At my office, we work with you to provide your spouse with a simple email or a letter to inform him or her that you have decided to end the marriage in a peaceful and respectful manner.

We invite your spouse to have an initial discussion with us to discuss divorce process options, and we provide your spouse with a list of respected collaborative divorce attorney’s that will help him or her to work through the process with us in a respectful and peaceful manner.

If you, or a friend of yours, has questions about Collaborative divorce in Palm Beach County, we are here to help.
