How Do I Estimate Child Support in Florida?

layton how to estimate child support florida Establishing a monthly child support obligation is not interesting, exciting, or fun.  However, it is mandatory if you are going through a divorce with a minor child in Florida.

In my experience, child support is not a major problem when it comes to divorce.  Instead, it is more of a question that you and your spouse need to understand and come to an agreement to resolve the issue.

The simple question is, how much is child support?

We have added a Child Support Calculator to our website to give you an estimate of what the child support obligation may be based on the unique circumstances of your marriage.

Check out the calculator here

This calculation is based upon the following factors:

  1. Number of minor children you have.
  2. Amount of net monthly income that you earn, and the amount that your spouse earns.
  3. Estimated number of overnights that your children will spend with you after the divorce during the year, and the number of overnights they will spend with your spouse. (i.e., what will your parenting plan look like).

There are many other factors that you and your spouse may also want to consider before you agree to a child support obligation.  These factors include:

  • What is the monthly health and dental insurance cost for our children?
  • What is the monthly childcare cost for our children?
  • What are the regular monthly extracurricular costs for our children?
  • Is there a private school tuition cost, if so, how much?
  • What income sources should we include as monthly “net income” for each of us?
  • Will there be a separate alimony obligation?

In Florida, there is an established guideline that helps us to determine  the minimum child support obligation for each individual family.  This guideline is found under Florida Statute 61.30.

I hope that this information helps you or someone that you know to resolve their divorce outside of court, with peace and respect.
